Urge Chinese Regime to Respect Human Rights in True Olympic Spirit
We, the undersigned, draw the attention of the International Olympic Committee to the following:
Whereas, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the International community have noted increasingly deteriorating human rights conditions in China.
Whereas, the recent report from David Kilgour, former Canadian MP and Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific and human rights lawyer David Matas, expose the horrific organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners by the communist regime.
Whereas, China is in a lucrative partnership that delivers billions of dollars in investment, oil revenue and weapons -- as well as diplomatic protection -- to Sudanese government accused of genocide in Darfur.
Whereas, the Chinese communist party has enforced a "gag order" on supporters of human rights in China including renowned lawyer Mr. Gao Zhisheng who is forbidden to speak to any media until after the 2008 Olympic Games.
Whereas, the Olympic Charter states in part:
"Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles(1);
The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity (2);
Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement (5)." (see Olympic Charter).
Therefore to ensure that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be conducted in true Olympic spirit and embody the principles of the Olympic Charter we urgently call on Mr. Jacques Rogge and his International Olympic Committee to:
• Speak out against the Chinese regime's illegal human rights violations
• Assure the rights and safety of all people including Falun Gong and human rights supporters if they wish to attend the Games without fear of being arrested, imprisoned or silenced.
